Position Summary 
At AccuWeather, we are at the center of innovation, combining meteorological and atmospheric sciences with cutting-edge AI to develop groundbreaking weather-related products and services.  We are seeking a highly skilled Applied Meteorologist IV to join our dynamic and intelligent Data Science team. In this role, you can expect to work on:

  • Collaborate with our team of data teams to guide meteorological modeling frameworks and data pipelines by integrating advanced atmospheric science principles and research findings 
  • Design and develop innovative approaches for weather analysis, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and scalability in operational environments  
  • Apply your meteorological expertise to various weather predictions, acting as a partner with our Data Scientists and ML Engineers  
  • Actively contribute and take initiative with the team’s daily operations, effectively communicating progress and findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders 
  • Take on team lead responsibilities by guiding and mentoring team members,  fostering a collaborating environment and ensuring successful execution of team initiatives   

 

Job Responsibilities 

  • Develop and refine meteorological datasets and models leveraging AccuWeather’s extensive data archives to better predict weather phenomena including severe weather from lightning occurrence to hail swaths and convective wind 
  • Analyze and interpret results to inform data teams of improvements, ensuring high accuracy and reliability 
  • Present findings to internal and external stakeholders, highlighting the why behind the analysis and how it benefits AccuWeather and AccuWeather data users  
  • Support data operations and data engineering on feature extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) from various sources, optimizing for efficiency and meteorological consistency 
  • Lead cross-departmental initiatives that provide insights to support a diverse range of business applications across different industry sectors, such as retail, advertising, energy, etc.  
  • Mentor and guide other Applied Meteorologists, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team environment  
  • Contribute to the advancement of atmospheric sciences through thorough research, publications, and participations in conferences   

Job Qualifications 

  • 5+ years of experience in applying advanced meteorological algorithms, models, or similar technologies to support a wide range of weather-impacted applications  
  • Proven track record of managing and executing large-scale meteorological projects 
  • Expert-level proficiency in meteorological datasets and data analysis including data mining, data transformation, and data verification, with significant experience in utilizing sensing and remote sensing data such as radar, satellite, and other observational data source 
  • Advanced knowledge or programming languages (Python, SQL, C++) for sophisticated analysis and model implementation  
  • Familiarity with big data technologies (Spark preferred) to hand and analyze large datasets efficiently  
  • Proven abilities to translate complex business requirements into innovative and effective weather-data-driven solutions  
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and convey complex concepts to non-experts clearly and effectively  
  • Strong presentation skills to articulate findings and insights to senior management and external stakeholders
