HOW WE WORK

As a high-growth start-up, the ALU Team works in starkly different ways to traditional academic bureaucracies. We approach education from first principles, empower individuals to design, test, and implement creative new ideas, and work closely together to craft transformative learning experiences. We are deeply passionate about our students and excited by the challenge of building something entirely new.

The African Leadership University is committed to ensuring the safety and Well-being of all students under our care. As part of this commitment , we have a comprehensive safeguarding policy in place , which outlines our Zero-tolerance approach to any violation of safeguarding.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The School of Wildlife Conservation is working on an exciting research project, funded by WIOMSA, to develop a baseline report on the state of nature-based tourism in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region, including a case study on Mafia Island, Tanzania. The report will (as much as data is available) highlight the value of nature-based tourism (NBT) in the blue economy in the WIO region to local, national
and regional economies and will emphasise the importance of the conservation of the related natural resources/asset base on which the NBT is dependent.

The research interns will support the SOWC team to collect, collate, analyse and report on data collected directly from various countries in the WIO region, as well as databases, and literature and through stakeholder engagements. The candidate needs to have a good working knowledge of Excel (other statistics programmes would be an advantage), Word, Powerpoint and to have
excellent research, writing and communication skills.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Attention to detail, very organised, proficiency in google sheets and google doc data analysis, data cleaning and visualization skills, excellent writing skills, ability to work under pressure, and good interpersonal skills.
  • Design experience and knowledge as well as experience working with spatial data would be added advantages.
  • A good knowledge of French and/or Portuguese (reading and writing) would be an advantage, though not required.
  • Conservation and/or nature-based tourism-related knowledge and experience is required.

Skill Development plan:

The interns will develop skills in data collection, collation, analysis and reporting, as well as stakeholder engagement and will gain a greater understanding of NBT in the WIO region, and the related data and information gaps.
