Job Summary:
Reporting to Flagship’s Senior Partner and Chief Communications Officer, the Senior Director, Corporate Communications at Flagship Pioneering will play a pivotal role in shaping the company’s core communications activities and promoting the public image and reputation of Flagship along with the companies in its ecosystem. As a key member of the Communications and Public Affairs team, you will help guide the activities of team members and also work closely with senior executives across the company to elevate Flagship’s story. This critical role requires a strategic leader and a creative, collaborative, roll-up-your-sleeves, team member. You will support core activities across a dynamic team to help formulate and execute innovative communication strategies that engage key stakeholders, drive brand awareness, and support the continued growth and success of Flagship Pioneering’s groundbreaking ventures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the execution of an integrated communications plan for both internal and external channels, driving compelling content, developing and amplifying corporate announcements, and executive communications that effectively convey Flagship’s unique narrative.
- This role will provide strategic direction and oversee the creation of strategies to support the firm's key strategic initiatives and businesses through targeted, timely communications.
- This role will supervise and mentor at least 2 direct reports, fostering professional growth and ensuring alignment with departmental goals.
- This role requires excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, the ability to focus and simplify tasks while managing multiple projects and programs from start to finish.
- This role will be based at our Cambridge, MA location. We have a hybrid model and onsite presence 3 times per week is required.
- Specific areas of focus include, but are not limited to:
Corporate Communications
- Lead strategic communications planning and execution for Flagship including, developing communications plans to promote key company milestones.
- Work may include preparing and/or editing press releases, presentations, and other materials for both internal and external audiences.
- Oversee the development of metrics and reporting for internal audiences.
- Provide guidance and oversee the management of various consultants and agencies.
Content Team Leadership
- Manage and lead institutional communications team responsible for content creation, storytelling, and production across external and internal channels including website, social channels, intranet, newsletters, and other distribution channels.
- Oversee management and strategy of corporate website providing creative input and direction along with overall team management.
- Oversee the content team’s engagement with external graphic design and video vendors in support of internal and external content production.
- This position will be responsible for the quality for written, video and audio content, ensuring it is effective and meets the highest standards.
Internal Communications
- Serve as trusted institutional communications lead for senior team and oversee and manage internal communications support of Flagship teams and functions.
- Partner with functional groups across the organization to provide guidance on internal communications, change management, and culture building.
- Actively participate in the planning and execution of important internal gatherings, including Town Hall meetings, and other events.
Communications and Public Affairs Team Operations
- Oversee and manage operational needs for the team, with the support of the team’s Communications Manager.
- Manage team budget including regular engagement with finance team to review actuals, and leading on reporting on budget.
- Manage development, review, and approval of all contracts.
- Help facilitate team meetings, offsites and other gatherings to ensure they are efficient and productive.
Event Strategy and Support
- Work with the Head of Events to support the planning and execution of select events, owning key aspects (this may include content development, panel selection, etc.).
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in corporate communications, public relations, or a similar role within the life sciences or biotechnology industry.
- Proven track record of developing and executing successful communication strategies that drive business growth and elevate brand reputation.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and presentation skills with the ability to craft compelling and clear narratives.
- Strategic thinker with excellent problem-solving abilities and the capability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Strong media relations experience a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a high-performing team.
- Highly collaborative with exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships across all levels of the organization.
