Job Title:             Medical Assistant - BILINGUAL

Department:       Riverview and Brandon Family Practice

Job Summary:    Responsible for direct patient care and the assisting of the Physician or mid-level practitioner.  Interview patients and take medical history, give injections, complete lab and diagnostic requests, keep charts current, and screen calls within physician and nursing guidelines.  Administer prescribed medications and treatment as directed by physician or mid-level practitioner.
**Bilingual in Spanish preferred but not required**

**Minimum 1 year of related experience required.**

Essential Functions of the Position – Duties Include but Are Not Limited To:

  • Completes the Start of Day Processes
    • Unlocks cabinets/doors and prepares exam rooms
    • Powers up equipment
    • Logs on all work stations in exam room, triage and work area
    • Completes the Opening Day Duties Checklist (Quality Controls, Temp. Logs)
  • Properly Room Patients
    • Ensures Patients flow through clinic in a smooth and efficient manner.  Will handle any complaints in reference to wait time or resolve any further inconveniences for patients with appointments or a walk-in emergency.
    • Takes and records vitals, notifying Provider immediately of high risk vitals/results
    • Confirms information required by provider is present (labs, hospital records, etc.)
    • Updates IEHR (allergies, medications, history, etc.)
    • Address Healthy Reminders, HEDIS Gap metrics and Care Team tab with every visit
    • Prepares patient for examination or treatment, with necessary instruments or supplies
    • Notifies provider when patient is ready using IEHR flow tracking events
  • Performs Procedures and Treatment as Ordered by Provider
    • Follows Nursing Standard guidelines and techniques to administer injections and vaccines.  Records all administered injections and vaccines in IEHR
    • Assists provider during examination and with treatment
    • Obtains ALL Informed Consents and ABN as necessary
    • Draw blood and prepare specimens and requisitions for lab courier
    • Ability to perform in-house tests/procedures ordered by Provider and results are documented or scanned into Patient Account
    • Wound Care
    • Immediately notifies Physicians/Providers of all positive findings
    • Distributes, reviews, and teaches patient education
    • Reviews discharge summary and appointments with the patient prior to discharge
  • Performs Administrative Clinical Duties
    • Chart Prepping in advance and acquires all medical records necessary for upcoming visit
    • Reviews chart and drug inventory to ensure drug is available
    • Handles medication refill requests as directed by Provider
    • Addresses monthly MEC Measures and HEDIS Gap reporting
    • Obtains Referrals, prescription overrides and prior authorization when needed
    • Enters Orders and Charges for services rendered and completed
    • Addresses and handles all tasks, as well as monitoring provider’s tasks
    • Handles patient calls (triaging calls if needed) , returns messages, and notifies patients of test results and instructions given by Provider
    • Makes follow up calls to check on patients post procedure as indicated by provider or office protocol
    • Assists provider with completion of forms requested by patient
    • Assists with proper scheduling of procedures and pertinent coding for billing
  • Completes the End of Day Processes
    • Maintains medical equipment; ensures all equipment is calibrated, cleaned, sterilized and charged
    • Completes End-of-Day Duties Checklist (Lab Specimen pick-up, lock cabinets, etc.)
    • Ensures all Urgent Tasks, Secure Messages and employee intranet email are addressed prior to end of day.
    • Collects red bags and replaces sharps containers when needed
    • Cleans, Sanitizes and Stocks exam rooms
    • Notifies the Clinical Supervisor when clinical and office supplies need replenishing
    • Empties HIPAA container into destruction bin
    • Logs off of ALL work stations including triage and exam rooms - Logs off Intergy, other outside accesses and out of computer before leaving

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Maintains an organized and clean work area
  • Organizes and maintains sample and supply closet
  • Successfully meets Metric Measures and HEDIS Gap goals
  • Completes the Weekly/Monthly Duties Checklists and turn-in to Supervisor
  • Attends required meetings
  • Participates in maintenance of clinical supplies
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required, assigned by Team Lead, Supervisor, Physicians or Associate Director
  • Front Desk/Medical Receptionist Duties as needed
  • Referral duties as needed

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Physical requirements
    • Able to stand or walk for long periods
    • Use of proper body mechanics
  • Normal concentration and normal complexity of decision making
  • High level verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to Type 40 W.P.M to work with Electronic Medical Record software
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Able to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Occasionally required to life and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds

Occupational Exposure:

  • High risk exposure to bloodborne pathogens and chemical hazards
  • Proper use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

Job Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent REQUIRED
  • 1 YEAR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Completion of MA certification program REQUIRED
  • CPR and CMA certification preferred
  • Strong team player
  • Basic computer proficiency
