Job Description

Job Title:                   Nuclear Medicine Technologist - FULL-TIME

Job Summary:  Nuclear Medicine Technologist that is skilled in both Cardiology and General Nuclear Medicine, someone who is willing to learn multiple cameras and work flows and will travel to other FMCOH locations when needed for coverage.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Administrative Functions

                  Coordinates nuclear schedule and workflow with other staff            

    • Thoroughly explains the test procedure to individual patients
    • Reviews toxicity and side effects of radiopharmaceuticals with the patient 
    • Documents patient information in a concise, clear and thorough manner
  • Clinical Skills
    • Prepares each dosage of radiopharmaceutical and administers through IV
    • Performs intravenous injections to include administration of diagnostic agents and medications
    • Administers medication in a safe and knowledgeable manner following established clinic policies and within the scope of  licensure 
    • Validates doses for accuracy, verification of  “5  Rights”
    • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge, skill and judgment of medications administered following clinic and manufacturer’s protocols for administration
    • Informs physician of any changes to patient’s condition during the nuclear study  
  • Manages and Maintains Medical Supplies, Equipment and Drug Inventory
    • Calculates the dosage of radiopharmaceutical needed for each patient
    • Orders the radiopharmaceuticals as needed
    • Maintains detailed documentation of amounts and types of radionuclides received, administered and disposed
    • Orders and maintains drug inventory and medical supplies
    • Maintains medical equipment; ensures all equipment is calibrated, cleaned, sterilized and operational
    • Performs quality controls as recommended by the manufacturer and required by accreditation and state
    • Maintains safety standards and all necessary state regulated documents
    • Works directly with the contracted physicist of the Nuclear Department
    • Empties red bags, replaces sharp containers, ensure all OSHA policies and procedures are followed
  • Operates the nuclear camera to detect and map the radioactive drug in the patient’s body
    • Positions patients accordingly on the nuclear equipment
    • Initiates gamma scintillation camera
    • Produces images on the computer monitor for physician interpretation
    • Notifies the physician immediately of abnormal studies
    • Ensures all nuclear studies are interpreted, dictated and copied to referring physicians
  • Completes the Encounter Form indicating the correct procedure codes for billing
  • Assists Administration in overseeing the Wesley Chapel Nuclear Department

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned
  • Earns CEU’s to maintain certification and licensure
  • Maintains an organized and clean work area

 

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Physical requirements
    • Able to stand for long periods
    • Use of proper body mechanics
    • Manual dexterity
  • Above average concentration and high level complexity of decision making
  • High level of attention to detail

 

Occupational Exposure:

  • High risk exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemical hazards and radiation exposure

 

Job Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Minimum of one year experience in a similar role 
  • Valid State of Florida, ARRT, NMTCB, CNMT, BLS licenses/certifications
  • Current Active Nuclear Medicine license
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Heightened sensitivity to patient’s physical and psychological needs
  • Ability to maintain quality and high standards to deliver excellent studies
  • Minimum 2 years experience required
