Our mission is to create a world where work empowers a better life, and it starts right here at Gusto. That’s why we’re committed to building a collaborative and inclusive workplace, both physically and virtually. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy

About the Role:

As a staff content designer for our Core Experiences team, you will lead in defining our content practice across our platform team. You will work with our team pods to create information architecture models, influence data modeling work and APIs, partner with design to create cohesive and system-driven experiences, and own content UI practices across our platform team. As a member of the Core Experiences UX team, you will partner with design, engineering, data and PM to ship meaningful product work. As a staff contributor, you will own content craft quality and leadership across the team, and help set the direction for how content should be involved in our product development process.

About the Team:

Product Design at Gusto is made up of over 60 creative, collaborative people who care deeply about our mission to empower small businesses and their employees. We’re a cross-functional bunch focused on Design, Research, Writing, Ops and Front-end Development who are always looking for opportunities to build understanding and empathy for the people who use Gusto. We don’t care a whole lot about swim lanes and we work closely with our partners in Product, Engineering, Data, and Marketing to design, build and ship experiences that make a difference. We are passionate advocates for thoughtful, crafted, and inclusive experiences and we believe great design can make hard things possible, even delightful. Read more about Design at Gusto.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Proactively gather context on product roadmaps across your scope, and prioritize the initiatives where you’ll have the most impact
  • Partner with data scientists and engineers to understand and influence how we are modeling our data and the downstream impact to our UX
  • Ship customer-facing UI content, content hierarchies, user flows, taxonomies, and information architectures. In some cases, you’ll do this independently, but mostly by pairing with cross-functional partners across product design, product management, and engineering
  • Collaborate with design leaders to set UX direction at the feature and product level
  • Work with app teams to understand to ensure consistency in communication across the product
  • Support cross-functional teams in refining their UI content and learning basic content design skills
  • Define and document platform-wide content standards and naming conventions
  • Champion the content design practice

Here’s what we're looking for:

    • Breadth of impact: You should have demonstrated experience prioritizing your focus across a number of opportunities, and be able to articulate how you made prioritization and tradeoff decisions.
    • Builder mindset: The person in this role will ship customer-facing products, not just documentation and frameworks. You should have examples of features you played a key role in designing and shipping. Ideally, you can demonstrate how you iterated on the content quality of these features over time.
    • High quality bar: This role will be a tireless advocate for our customers’ experience with Gusto. You should be able to demonstrate how you’ve championed content quality across an organization, and improved teams’ content skills and ways of working.
    • Comprehensive content toolkit: The person in this role will do more than UI writing. You should have a well-rounded content design practice, ideally including aspects of information architecture, UX design (especially information hierarchies and user flows), and evaluative research. You should be able to demonstrate how you’ve had structural and strategic impact on your past projects.
    • Experience with platform work: The person in this role would benefit from experience with platform UX, specifically systems-oriented design work. Understanding object-oriented content frameworks, as well as knowing when and how to introduce them to a team, would be valuable.
