Staff Software Engineer, Rider Segments

We’re looking for a backend Staff Software Engineer to shape and drive the technical roadmap for the Rider Segments organization. In this role, you’ll collaborate across engineering teams to develop exciting features and products used by millions of people every day. Rider Segments focuses on incentivizing riders to choose Lyft, creating differentiated features, and integrating strategic partners into our rideshare ecosystem.
Responsibilities:
- Shape our long-term technical vision & roadmap for the group
- Lead major updates to our backend systems
- Break down complex problems into deliverables
- Coordinate with engineering teams to ensure successful execution
- Design, extend, and implement robust APIs
- Effectively communicate technical trade-offs and decisions to stakeholders
- Collaborate with product managers, engineers, data scientists, and external partners
- Mentor and support other backend engineers through code reviews, design feedback, and ongoing guidance
Experience:
- 8+ years of expertise in architecting, building, and scaling distributed systems
- Proven track record as a Tech Lead, supporting multiple engineering teams
- Prior experience defining long-term technical visions
- Strong proficiency in object-oriented programming
- Deep knowledge of architecture and design patterns
- Familiar with databases, relational and NoSQL
- Prior experience working with product managers, designers, and engineering teams
- Excellent communication skills, with advanced proficiency in English
Nice to have:
- Ability to thrive in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment, demonstrating flexibility and proactively guiding technical direction
- Proven experience elevating engineering standards and best practices, including code quality, performance optimization, and conducting thorough code reviews
- Collaborative experience working with engineers across various platforms (Mobile, Backend), as well as data scientists

This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule — Team Members will be expected to work in the office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Additionally, hybrid roles have the flexibility to work from anywhere for up to 4 weeks per year. #Hybrid
The expected base pay range for this position in the San Francisco area is $176,000 - $220,000. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location. Range is not inclusive of potential equity offering, bonus or benefits.
