The opportunity 

As an Associate Process Engineer within our Materials Research Team, you will contribute to developing cutting-edge materials and processes for augmented reality (AR) applications. This role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in optical waveguide fabrication and development while helping shape the future of immersive technologies.

This role requires someone to be onsite in Austin, TX. Relocation assistance may be available

What you’ll do 

  • Perform thin film deposition processes, including sputtering, evaporation, and other relevant techniques.
  • Develop and implement new dry etch processes by optimizing gas flows, chemistries, and power settings.
  • Design and conduct experiments, analyze data (SEM, AFM, etc.), and recommend process improvements.
  • Manage and execute wafer cleaning and preparation processes to ensure optimal substrate quality for deposition.
  • Operate optical metrology tools to evaluate and validate process outcomes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support project goals and troubleshoot challenges.
  • Travel to vendor facilities to oversee and support custom fabrication processes, including tool setup, process qualification, and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of processes, results, and improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and environmental regulations.

The experience you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field (required).
  • 2+ years of experience working in a clean room environment, preferably in a semiconductor fab.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to vendor sites for process support and custom fabrication activities.

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Proficiency in material characterization tools, such as microscopy (optical, SEM) and analytical methods (EDS, XRF), as well as surface analysis techniques like Auger, XPS, and SIMS.
  • Experience or knowledge of vacuum systems and pumps.

Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. In addition to salary, Magic Leap offers a discretionary bonus, equity, and a fully comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees.

$70,000$93,000 USD
