MLB’s Strategy & Development (S&D) organization is a centralized resource within Baseball’s Office of the Commissioner.  The S&D organization works cross-functionally across MLB to support the development and execution of our strategies for growing baseball globally.

As part of our charter, S&D is a service organization that oversees 5 key areas:

  • Strategy: Align Industry strategic direction and provide internal consulting services to League Verticals and Functions, Clubs, Office of the Commissioner
  • Club Biz Ops & Strategy: Support development of club strategies, best practices, x-functional dialogue
  • Analytics: Centralized home for data-driven-insights to advise and support Strategy, Clubs, League Verticals and Functions
  • Operations: Implement and stand-up new initiatives
  • Corporate Development: Identify and activate inorganic growth opportunities for MLB that support our strategy and provide economic return

Responsibilities

The Senior Analytics Engineer assists our seasoned team of dedicated professionals in delivering business-critical, analytical solutions that impact the league. The Analytics team within the Strategy & Development (S&D) department is responsible for partnering with multiple areas of the organization to not only develop impactful insight for a particular vertical through the utilization of various data resources but provide sage direction on what is possible for the league’s success looking across all departments.

As the Senior Analytics Engineer working in our NYC office, your primary task will be leading various parts of the data journey, constructing end to end analyses that are leveraged by senior management and model data. We all contribute, whether it is for two people or a project that is touched by all aspects of an Organization - the aim of this game is to deliver. Your careful attention to detail, fearlessness in rolling up your sleeves to build on your own, and honed problem-solving talents will serve you well as you develop visualizations, dashboards, and reports. The data that feeds those developments are maintained through logical transformations of the data owned by our team. The presentation of the data story will be a crucial contribution to the analytical adaptation across baseball, which continues to be the backbone of some of baseball's critical operational decisions. For as much as you gain through hands-on experience and professional gratification by having your efforts exposed to the decision-makers behind all facets of the game of baseball, you will be expected to be a thought leader in the verticals you own and contribute as a high-performing member of this team.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 4-7 years of relevant experience in analytics engineering or related field.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field. Candidates with non-traditional backgrounds but strong relevant experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional projects, developing and implementing BI solutions across multiple business lines that cater to diverse user skill levels, while consistently meeting project deadlines and deliverables.
  • Proven track record of building strong stakeholder relationships and championing data-driven decision-making, with a focus on integrating analytics solutions into various business processes and influencing organizational strategy.
  • Exceptional ability to translate complex business processes and systems into clear, actionable technical requirements, bridging the gap between business needs and technical solutions.
  • Proficiency in quantitative data collection and data analysis (e.g., SQL, Excel etc.) is required, with the ability to write complex freehand SQL including sub-queries, nested queries, and other advanced SQL features and read others’ complex queries and spot potential issues.
  • Expertise in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) analytic products (BigQuery, Pub/Sub, GCS, DataPlex).
  • Expert-level proficiency in data visualization and BI platforms, including mastery of tools such as Looker (with PBL), Tableau, PowerBI, or Shiny Apps.
  • Experience with software development tools (IDEs, Git, Docker) and end-to-end SDLC processes.
  • Outstanding communication skills, with a proven ability to articulate complex technical concepts effectively to diverse audiences, ranging from development teams to executive leadership.
  • Client / Business customer centric experience is preferred; High IQ, low Ego.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • A bit of a MacGyver, as an adaptable problem-solver, capable of developing creative solutions for unique challenges.

Preferred Skills and Background

  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Java, Python, or other object-oriented languages.
  • Experience with modern analytics engineering tools, such as dbt (data build tool), Dataform, or similar platforms, demonstrating proficiency in building scalable and maintainable data models and transformation logic.
  • Experience with Apache Airflow.
  • Familiarity with highly scalable and distributed applications.
  • Baseball knowledge and/or love of the game of baseball.
  • Consulting, presenting data and presentation experience.

Per the NYC pay transparency law, the hiring range for this position is $130,000 - $155,000.

As a candidate for this position, your salary and related elements of compensation will be contingent upon your work experience, education, skills and any other factors Major League Baseball (MLB) considers relevant to the hiring decision.
