Environmental, Social, & Governance Officer 

Organization Summary: One Earth Future is an international NGO whose mission is to provide growth capital and support services to small- and medium-sized enterprises in fragile and conflict-affected settings. We currently manage the Nordic Horn of Africa Opportunities Fund, a $28 million Sharia-compliant debt fund in Somalia, and are preparing to expand in the Horn of Africa and francophone west Africa. OEF believes that, with the right support, small and medium-sized enterprises can be a driving force for peace and prosperity in their countries.

Primary Role: The Shuraako Environmental, Social, & Governance Officer (E&S Officer) will support core work relating to the Nordic Horn of Africa Opportunities Fund (NHAOF) for Environmental, Social, & Governance matters in investment and business development workstreams. The E&S Officer is responsible for completing assignments with thorough responsibilities and demanding deadlines to monitor and implement E&S-related activities. This position works closely with the Integrity Risk Officer, reports to the US-based Associate Director of Compliance, and has a dotted reporting line to the Director of Shuraako.

Job Type: Hourly, Full-Time.  Typically, the E&S Officer will work 45 hours per week.

Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $6.50 - $7.00 per hour.  

Location: The position will be based in Mogadishu.

Reports to: Associate Director of Compliance with dotted reporting line to the Director of Shuraako. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Analyze new investment deals to ensure compliance with NHAOF’s E&S Provisions and client suitability with Shuraako’s E&S obligations.
  • Carry out E&S diligence research on new and existing clientele for use in client KYC documentation and for reporting purposes.
  • Carry-out client sites visits to conduct E&S assessments using IFC Performance Standards, the International Bill on Human Rights, ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, local environmental laws, local labor laws, and other E&S-related standards that Shuraako, NHAO, and OEF follow.
  • Guide and assist investee businesses on the implementation of E&S-related mitigation activities.
  • Regularly interact with different OEF teams and with clients to identify potential opportunities to improve E&S performance.
  • Assist the Integrity Risk Officer, Associate Director of Compliance, Vice President of Finance & Compliance, and/or Director of Shuraako with E&S-related investigations and efforts, as assigned.
  • Prepare and present E&S mitigation reports to OEF’s ESG Committee.
  • Monitor E&S-related activities, incident reporting from investee business, and coordinate related data collection and reporting.
  • Provide overall E&S-related support to OEF, Shuraako, and NHAOF.
  • Review and help align/update systems and procedures to ensure E&S practices are carried-out effectively and in-line with industry standards.
  • Develop relevant E&S policies and procedures as part of the organization’s Environmental and Social Management System.
  • Prepare yearly E&S annual performance reports.
  • Other E&S and Compliance-related tasks as required.
  • Other duties as needed.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Competences:

  • Completed university degree in environmental studies, business administration, or relevant degree in an applicable field.
  • 2+ years of proven professional experience working for or in supporting companies in the field of ESG and/or Social Impact.
  • Good understanding of standards and guidelines including but not limited to IFC Performance Standards, International Bill on Human Rights, and ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work.
  • Good understanding of environmental and social legislation.
  • Good understanding of health and safety and sustainability principles.
  • Strong quality control, compliance, analytical, and risk assessment skills.
  • Good ability to communicate with staff, the private sector, industry, and other stakeholders.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English and Somali.
  • Proficiency in MS Office / 365.
  • Hands-on-mentality and persistence to carry out projects and tasks.

Physical Work Demands:

  • Able to sit at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Able to bend at the waist and reach daily.
  • Able to lift and move up to 25 lbs. regularly.
  • Able to travel locally in different regions.
